Yesterday, Makena woke up and asked me about getting ears pierced and what they did and if it hurt. I went over everything that Kali had just been through and told Makena that yes it will hurt, but just for a little bit and then it will feel better. Makena even went to Kali and asked her about getting her ears pierced and if it hurt or not.
The day went on and we had a normal Sunday...and come 8:00 pm, Makena came into my room and said, "Mom, I'm ready to get my ears pierced. I want to do them tomorrow." I said, "Okay, we will wait for Dad to come home and then me and you will go into the store and get them done."
She was excited, but very nervous. She told me over and over how she only wanted one person to pierce her ears and she didn't want people looking at her. I was hoping nobody was going to be in the store when we went.
So this morning, we got up and I asked Makena if she was excited and still ready and she said that she was. We went to the splash park in the morning and came home and had lunch and watched a movie. Then we played downstairs and Jarel came home from work. As we were downstairs talking, Makena started to cry and said she didn't want to get her ears pierced. I knew she really wanted too, but she was scared to death of getting them done. I told her she didn't have to have them done and that we could do it another day. We needed to go grocery shopping, so we got everyone in the car...and as the kids were getting in the car, I pulled Makena aside and talked with her for a bit about how I would be right there with her and I she could sit on my lap when they did it. She was still in tears and said she didn't want to do it. I left it at that, gave her a hug and off we went for dinner and grocery shopping.
While we were at dinner, Makena started to tear up and she looked at me and said, "I really want them done, but I am scared." I hugged her and said that we would go after grocery shopping.
After the fun trip to the grocery store, Jarel dropped Makena and I off at Clair's to get her ears pierced while he went home to put the food away. I got out of the car and went and got Makena and off we went. Makena didn't really say much and as we walked into the store, she had a slight smile. And there was nobody in the store! She sat in the chair, and hugged the teddy bear. She then looked at the earrings and picked out the Hello Kitty ones. The lady prepped her ears and as she was getting ready I asked Makena if she wanted to sit on my lap. She shook her head yes and so I put her on my lap. The lady did the first ear and Makena was brave and she did the second ear. No crying, no complaining, just a smile on her face. She was so happy and as we left the store she said, "Mom, I'm so glad I got them done." She hasn't stopped looking in the mirror at them in her ears. I'm so proud of her. This was a HUGE step for her. She was petrified of having them done, but she did it! Afterwards I asked if it hurt and if it was as bad as she thought it would be and she said that it hurt a little but now they feel good.
Way to go Makena, you were one tough cookie!! Now you know that you can face your fears and do anything you set your mind too...even if it hurts for just a little bit!
